Your library provides you with online access to complete articles from thousands of magazines and journals, and that's just the beginning. Also available are biographies, reports, pamphlets and additional reference materials. You will need a Broadview Library card number to access these databases.

General Collection:

ArticleFirst: An OCLC index of articles, some full-text, from the contents pages of journals and magazines. For most journals, ArticleFirst provides a list of libraries that have the journal title.
Agriculture Collection: With a strong emphasis on titles covered in the Agricola database, this collection of more than 400 titles is focused on agriculture and its related fields: from practical aspects of farming to cutting edge scientific research in horticulture. In addition, over 20 Delmar reference titles provide in-depth coverage on a variety of agricultural related topics.

Biography Resource Center: Comprehensive, current, and easy to use, Biography Resource Center helps illuminate the lives of the world’s most important and intriguing figures. We support the study of notable individuals in the arts, business, government, history, popular culture, sports, and more.

Books & Authors:  This database offers new ways to explore the endless possibilities and combinations of books, authors, genres and topics. The ideal convergence of science and serendipity, this online resource leverages the Internet’s unique
capacity to create, build, communicate with and sustain communities of readers.

Business and Company Resource Center provides access to a wide variety of global business information including competitive intelligence, career and investment opportunities, business rankings, company histories and much more.

Communications and Mass Media Collection: A specialized collection of more than 250 journals focused on all aspects of the communications field: key subjects covered include advertising and public relations, linguistics, and literature.

Computer Database: For researchers who need to keep pace with the fast changing world of high technology, Computer Database is their Internet- accessible reference solution. With Computer Database, library users can access today's most well-read and influential periodicals on the computer, telecommunications and electronics industries -- all in one seamless search.

Criminal Justice Collection: Whether studying to become a lawyer or law enforcement officer, paralegal, or for a career in Homeland Security, this collection rises to the challenge. Users will have access to 150 journals.

Culinary Arts Collection: The Culinary Arts Collection includes 150 of the major cooking and nutrition magazines from 1980 to present. Coverage includes thousands of searchable recipes, restaurant reviews, and industry information.

Educator's Reference Complete: This collection of more than 1,100 periodicals and 200 reports is a great resource for any educator -- from the school teacher and administrator to those studying in the field at the collegiate and graduate level. Educator's Reference Complete is the perfect complement for any library that utilizes the ERIC database, because it provides full-text results for nearly half of the journal titles found in ERIC. This database covers multiple levels of education from preschool to college, and every educational specialty -- such as technology, bilingual education, health education, and testing. Educator's Reference Complete also focuses on issues in administration, funding and policy.

Environmental Studies and Policy Collection: A collection of over 700 journals and 6 subject specific Delmar reference titles provide robust coverage of environmental issues and policies, including diverse perspectives from the scientific community, governmental policy makers, as well as corporate interests.

ECO (Electronic Collections Online): An OCLC collection of scholarly journals, some full-text, which includes all of the original content and images of articles. Topics covered include: agriculture, library science, anthropology, literature, business, medicine, economics, philosophy, education, political science, fine arts, psychology, geography, religion, history, science, language, social science, law, and technology.

Fine Arts and Music Collection: With more than 150 full-text magazines and journals covered in databases such as the Wilson Art Index and RILM, this collection will provide support for research in areas such as drama, music, art history, and filmmaking.

Gardening, Landscape and Horticulture Collection: A collection of more than 80 journals focused on key issues in gardening, landscaping, and other areas of horticulture, with the addition of over 20 subject specific reference sources from Delmar, this collection provides information for gardening enthusiasts and professionals alike.

General OneFile: Gale's General OneFile is a comprehensive periodical resource that puts more than 60 million articles at your fingertips with a single search query. More than 11,000 titles and backfile coverage from 1980 — from mainstream to specialized sources — and an intuitive search interface make this an unequaled source for virtually every popular, business and professional topic.

Grolier Online Passport: Grolier Online Passport includes eight encyclopedia databases: Encyclopedia Americana, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, The New Book of Knowledge, La Nueva Enciclopedia Cumbre, America the Beautiful, Lands and Peoples,Amazing Animals and The New Book of Popular Science.

Health and Wellness Resource Center and Alternative Health Module: This resource provides a one stop, full-service resource for alternative and complimentary therapies. It provides a rich collection of books, journals, magazines and pamphlets for consumers and health care professionals.

History Resource Center: US: With its unique combination of primary and secondary sources, History Resource Center: U.S. places the tools of the historian in the hands of the student and general researcher. Award winning encyclopedias from Charles Scribner's Sons, Gale and Macmillan Reference USA coalesce with primary materials drawn from some of the world's most notable libraries via Primary Source Microfilm. This array of content types provides both depth and breadth and covers U.S. history from pre-colonial times to the present.

History Resource Center: World  is a comprehensive online collection of full-text periodicals, reference works and primary source documents covering world history topics from pre-antiquity up to the present. The database also features a significant amount of newly available reference content – supported by additional primary source materials – and periodic content loads. This virtual library provides the resources needed – credible multicultural, global and research-based content – to study world history within a flexible and convenient electronic search tool.

Home Improvement Collection: This collection of more than 180 home-improvement focused titles covers such topics as architectural techniques, tool and material selection, zoning requirements, and many more will meet the needs of hobbyists and professionals alike.

Illinois Catalog: An online catalog containing millions of bibliographic records cataloged by Illinois OCLC member libraries. Materials cataloged include: books, manuscripts, websites and internet resources, maps, computer programs, musical scores, films and slides, newspapers, journals and magazines, sound recordings, articles, chapters, papers, and videotapes held by Illinois libraries.

Kids InfoBits targets the research needs of students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. It features a developmentally appropriate and visual graphic interface, a subject-based topic tree search and full-text, age-appropriate, curriculum-related magazine and reference content.

Lands and Peoples contains concise information on countries and cultures throughout the world, and events of national and international interest. It provides links to further readings, World Wide Web links, recipes, maps, flags, facts and figures, and pictures.

LegalTrac: Students, law school faculty and legal researchers will all find the legal publications they need in LegalTrac™. Drawing on a wide variety of the most highly regarded legal publications, LegalTrac™ provides indexing for approximately 875 titles including major law reviews, legal newspapers, bar association journals and international legal journals. Each title included in LegalTrac™ is selected on the basis of criteria provided by a special advisory committee of the American Association of Law Libraries. Nursing and Allied Health Collection: Including more than 1000 titles, this collection's current and authoritative content will be of use to both nursing professionals already working in the field as well as students pursuing a nursing-focused curriculum.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center draws on the acclaimed social issues series published by Greenhaven Press, as well as core reference content from other Gale and Macmillan Reference USA sources, including selections from Bioethics for Students. WilsonSelectPlus:  Full text articles in science, humanities, education and business.

WorldAlmanac: Includes Funk & Wagnall's New Encyclopedia, the World Almanac and Book of Facts, the World Almanac of the U.S.A., the World Almanac of U.S. Politics, and the World Almanac for Kids.

World Book Discover: This database offers engaging reference resources for students reading below grade level because of language or learning difficulties, with content and tools specifically developed for these students.

World Book Info Finder: This database is an excellent resource for helping elementary and middle school students with projects and homework.

World Book for Kids: Easy-to-read articles, multimedia, games, science projects, interactive tools, and activities for young readers.

World Book Online Reference Center: This site offers encyclopedic content as well as computer and Web tutorials, government resources, e-books, and primary source documents.

World Book Spanish Language Encyclopedia (Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos): This site is an excellent beginner’s Spanish language reference tool. The site offers World Book’s excellent editorial content, rich media, and engaging features in Spanish.

WorldCat: An OCLC catalog containing millions of bibliographic records about books and other materials in libraries worldwide.

 

EBooks:

Project Gutenberg is the place where you can download over 30,000 free ebooks to read on your PC, iPhone, Kindle, Sony Reader or other portable device. The books are free in the United States because their copyright has expired

Health:

MEDLINE: A database (with some full-text) covering all areas of medicine, including dentistry and nursing. MEDLINE corresponds to the print indexes Index Medicus, Index to Dental Literature, and International Nursing Index. It includes thousands of records with substantial abstracts. Subjects include: clinical medicine, nutrition, dentistry, pathology, education, psychiatry, experimental medicine, toxicology, health services administration, veterinary medicine, and nursing.

Newspapers:

Illinois Newpapers: Includes the Chicago Tribune Historical Archives(1860-1984), Chicago Sun-Times (1986-Current), Arlington Heights Post, Belleville News-Democrat, Pantagraph (Bloomington), Peoria Journal Star, Rockford Register Star, and the State Journal-Register (Springfield).  Also includes Americas News Magazines featuring full-text articles from various familiar magazines, such as Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News & World Report.

Chicago Tribune: Comprehensive full-text coverage of the Chicago Tribunes contents back to 1985.

Spanish/Español:

ClasePeriodica: CLASE indexes documents published in Latin American journals specializing in the social sciences and humanities, while PERIODICA covers journals specializing in science and technology. This database contains information from articles, essays, book reviews, monographs, conference proceedings, technical reports, interviews, and brief notes published in journals edited in 24 different countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as from publications focusing on Pan-American issues.

Informe: Created exclusively for Spanish-speaking users, this full-text electronic reference tool is the first system to provide indexing, images and full text of popular Hispanic magazines -- not just translations. Also included is a thesaurus and interface that are uniquely designed for Spanish-speaking users. ¡Informe! thinks through every query in Spanish. Terms and thesaurus are based on the expressions Spanish-speakers commonly use, allowing users to easily navigate through the database without experiencing inaccurate search terms. ¡Informe! also features title annotations in both English and Spanish to help non-Spanish speaking staff to easily assist users. Students of Spanish, as well as non-native speakers can also easily access ¡Informe!'s resources through this bilingual approach.

Other Specialized Databases:

ERIC: A collection of journal articles and reports in education, with some full-text. It contains annotated references to non-journal material issued in the monthly Resources in Education (RIE) and the journal articles issued in the monthly Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE).

GPO: U.S. federal government publications, including Congressional reports, hearings, debates, and records; judiciary materials; and documents issued by executive departments (Defense, State, Labor, Office of the President, etc.). Includes a bibliographic citation in each record.

PapersFirst: An OCLC index of papers presented at conferences worldwide. Covers every published congress, symposium, conference, exposition, workshop, and meeting received by the British Library Document Supply Centre.

Proceedings: An OCLC index of worldwide conference proceedings. Covers every published congress, symposium, conference, exposition, workshop, and meeting received by the British Library Document Supply Centre.

WorldCatDissertations: A database of all dissertations and theses available in WorldCat.

Test Preparation:

Learning Express Library: This is a collection of practice tests and study modules for a such tests as the SAT, ACT, GED, GRE, MCAT, TOEFL, and many others. Check the site for more information. To access the the service you need a Broadview Library card. Click the tab marked "New User". Your library card number beginning "2 1314..." acts as your "username". You then create your own password. Once you've done this you can easily log in and out of this service whenever you like.

 

Homework Help:

Live Homework Help connects students in grades K-12 with online tutors for live, one-to-one help in math, science, English, and social studies. Tutors are available from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m., seven days a week.  Your Broadview library card is needed to connect to this service.
