Documents can be scanned and emailed directly from the copier (free!); documents can also be scanned onto a flash drive. Scanning is free.

And finally, beginning in March of 2012 the Broadview Public Library will be making eBooks available to all resident cardholders in the Broadview Public Library District

NEW UNATTENDED CHILD POLICY

On June 13, 2011, the Broadview Public Library District Board of Trustees voted to approve the Unattended Child Policy. The Broadview Public Library District endeavors to provide a suitable environment for children to use and enjoy its materials, programs and other resources. However, parents should be aware that the Library is a public building open to all, and that the staff is unable to monitor the safety or whereabouts of each child visiting the Library.

Parental responsibility:

  • Parents/legal guardians are solely responsible for their children while they are in the Library.
  • Children under the age of 10 must be attended by a parent or other responsible caregiver age 16 or older at all times while in the Library.
  • All children must be picked up by closing time.
  • The Library staff will attempt to contact parents of children whose safety is in doubt. If parents or caregivers are unavailable, the staff will contact the Police to provide custody.

ONE BOOK-ONE COMMUNITY

READING INITIATIVE
As part of Triton College’s One Book-One Community reading initiative, the Broadview Public Library, in partnership with the Broadview Toastmasters, will host an evening of speeches centered around the book The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch with Jeffrey Zaslow. Members of the Broadview community are encouraged to read this compelling book and join us on Wednesday, November 16th, at 6:30 p.m., at the Library, for some wonderful reflections on an excellent book.  A copy of the book (with more on the way) is available at the Library.

FOOD FOR FINES
From Monday, October 17th through Monday, December 12, the Broadview Public Library District is sponsoring a food-for-fines drive. Proceeds from the drive will go to the Broadview Service Center, Inc. (the Food Pantry at 2000 Roosevelt Rd.). For each canned item or non-perishable donated, a patron’s fines will be reduced by $1.00. The program applies only to fines on overdue items owned by Broadview Public Library District. It does not apply in the case of fees and charges for lost or damaged items.

NEW COMPUTER LAB
Library users may have noticed the Broadview Public Library District’s new computer lab. Thanks, in part, to the second installment of an Opportunity Online Hardware Grant the library was awarded back in the summer of 2009, under the auspices of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the library now has 15 computers - 11 on the adult side and 4 in the youth services section. There are an additional six computers in the meeting room, for instructional and other purposes. The new computer stations were donated by the Elmwood Park Public Library. Computer registration will now be automated. Using an automated system, PCReservation®, district cardholders and visitors with a guest pass will now simply sit down at an available computer, enter their library card barcode, and be automatically logged on for a one hour session. The computer will automatically log off (after adequate notice) at the end of an hour, giving the user the option of staying on longer if no one is scheduled to use the computer. Alternatively, computers can be reserved up to 7 days in advance (up to 24 hours on a guest pass) by logging on to a computer located at a special registration station across from circulation. Non-residents, and residents without their cards, will be able to use any available computer for a $2.00 fee per use (extendable beyond one hour if no one is previously scheduled).

New Trustees "On Board" at the Library
On Tuesday, April 5, 2011, Broadview residents Katrina Arnold, Robert Jones, and Michael Wideman were elected to six-year terms on the library board of trustees. They were sworn-in on May 10. At the April board meeting, Valarie Watkins was appointed to fill the board position left vacant by the resignation of long-time board member Verna Williams.
Katrina Arnold works as corporate controller for a lighting manufacturing company in Niles. Mrs. Arnold would like to extend a ‘thank you’ to residents of Broadview for electing her to the board. “I
plan to serve”, she said, “with a spirit of vision, integrity and purpose”. Mrs. Arnold also plans to advocate for building a state of the art library that would not only nurture learning through the magic of books, but that will be a magnetic place that attracts children, parents and others by becoming a center for cultural events, senior citizen gatherings, and a resource for advanced research.
Robert (BJ) Jones, a Broadview resident for over 40 years, and a volunteer and supporter to local government, is committed to a long term involvement in the community. “I truly appreciate the strong support the residents of Broadview extended to the library [trustee] candidates”, he said, and “I will serve with purpose and concern
for library issues”. Mr. Jones would like to translate his commitment to people and the community into a vision that includes building a new library that can properly service our community as it is today and for
the future.  He intends to bring this vision to fruition by working closely with his fellow board members, the library director, as well as the Mayor of Broadview and his administration.
Michael Wideman has lived in Broadview for 15 years. He has always valued education and encouraged his children to read. He
believes that reading allows children to broaden their thinking and to experience places or things that they have never seen. Mr. Wideman would like to thank the residents of Broadview for electing him to the library board. “I promise to support the vision of the director of the library”, he said, “and bring synergy, ideas, and principle to the board.”
Along with Verna Williams, board president Marva Newman will be departing, both after many years on the library board. The library board and library staff would like to thank both Verna and Marva for their
long service to the library and to the community.

The Library Has a New Director

On January 3, 2011, the Broadview Public Library District welcomed Melissa Gardner as the new Library Executive Director, succeeding Carl Caruso, who retired in September. Mrs. Gardner comes to Broadview from neighboring Berkeley Public Library, where she served as director from 2007 until 2010. Prior to that, she served as Assistant Director at the Glenwood-Lynnwood Public Library. Other library experience has included stints at the Newberry Library and the Chicago Public Library.

Mrs. Gardner holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Art from Illinois State University at Normal, and a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from Dominican University in River Forest. She is an active member of the American Library Association (ALA) and the Illinois Library Association (ILA) and has served on the SWAN Council of the Metropolitan Library System (MLS).

A devoted mother of two boys, Mrs. Gardner enjoys adventure, whether it be a trip to the zoo, or scuba diving in Kauai. She also enjoys spending time with the kids, tennis, as well as all sorts of animals, and art.

Mrs. Gardner enjoys reading. Among her favorite genres are romance, African writers, mystery, as well as popular fiction. To find out what she is reading now, you can visit http://www.goodreads/mgardner.

Among her immediate goals and objectives, Mrs. Gardner plans on overseeing physical improvements to the library, as well as technology upgrades, and expansion of programs for teens.

Mrs. Gardner enjoys getting out into the community and meeting people. Broadview residents are strongly encouraged to stop by the library for a visit with her, or to contact her either by phone, or by email at mgardner@broadviewlibrary.org.

Library Gets Gates Grant
The Broadview Public Library District is one of 128 libraries statewide (and one of only two libraries in our immediate area) awarded an Opportunity Online Hardware Grant. The grant, furnished by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is administered by the Illinois State Library, and will allow the Broadview Public Library District to purchase new computers and upgrade older ones. Library Executive Director Carl Caruso submitted the application for the grant in January 2009; the final decision came down in July. The grant will be disbursed over a two-year period. It is hoped that the funding received through this generous grant will result in a net gain of five additional computers for public use, and an upgrade of five existing computers at the library.

New Museum Adventure Pass!

Broadview Library card holders can receive free admission or other discounts to 17 museums and cultural institutions in the Chicago area.  The pass has been generously sponsored by Macy's.
